Preparing for the SMC and BMO Round 1 from a UK Boarding School

A practical preparation plan for new Year 12 international students at UK boarding schools, covering the August-to-November window leading into BMO Round 1.

BMO and UKMT Pathway Guide editorial team

Year 12 is the academic year in which the senior end of the UKMT pipeline becomes real for international students at UK boarding schools. By the half-term of the autumn term, three things should be on the calendar: the Senior Mathematical Challenge in October, the British Mathematical Olympiad Round 1 in mid-November, and the Andrew Jobbings Senior Kangaroo in late November. This article is the preparation plan we recommend for the new Year 12 cohort arriving at a UK school in September.

We assume two starting conditions: the student is already a strong mathematician (typically Maclaurin Distinction or equivalent international Olympiad performance in Year 11), and the school has standard UKMT registration. If either condition is uncertain, the WhatsApp advisor is the right next step before starting the preparation calendar below.

August: the four weeks before term

If you have access to UKMT past papers and the standard Olympiad reading list (see our Resources page), the four weeks before the start of Year 12 are the most valuable preparation window. The goal is to arrive at school in September with the SMC paper format and the BMO Round 1 problem style already familiar.

The practical pattern: sit one SMC paper per week under timed conditions (60 minutes for the SMC, 90 minutes for the SMC if you are sitting it in October as a Year 12 — UKMT increased the SMC duration to 90 minutes for the 2024–25 season onwards). Sit one BMO Round 1 past paper per fortnight under timed conditions (3 hours 30 minutes). Read Engel’s Problem Solving Strategies, chapters on number theory and combinatorics, alongside.

What to skip in August

Three things we recommend skipping in the four-week preparation window: (1) the Cayley / Hamilton / Maclaurin past papers — these are calibrated for younger cohorts and the time is better spent on BMO Round 1; (2) advanced geometry texts (Coxeter and Greitzer) — save these for late Year 12 when you have BMO Round 1 result feedback; (3) any “exam technique” or “rapid recall” courses — the BMO does not reward exam technique in the way that, for example, the AMC and AIME do.

September: term starts

The first three weeks of term are typically settling-in time at most UK boarding schools. The mathematics department should confirm in the first week that you are registered for the SMC. If you are an international student and the school has not automatically registered you, this is the moment to raise it with the department head — the registration deadline for SMC is typically in late September.

During this period, the consensus problem-solving routine is: two past-paper problems per week with full written solution (typically Maclaurin Distinction-tier problems for warmup, then BMO Round 1 difficulty), plus one full SMC past paper sat under timed conditions. The Engel chapter reading continues at the rate of one chapter per two weeks.

October: SMC week

The SMC sitting is on a fixed Thursday in early October each year. The exact date is published by UKMT in September. The paper is sat in your own school, typically during a normal mathematics lesson, with the results returned to the school in mid-October. The SMC is the qualifier for BMO Round 1 invitation; the top one to two per cent of SMC scorers nationally receive an invitation, with the cutoff varying year-to-year. Schools may also enter additional students for BMO Round 1 on a discretionary basis.

In the week before the SMC sitting, we recommend a single full SMC past paper under timed conditions, plus revision of any problem types that have been giving difficulty. Avoid attempting to learn new content in the final week — the goal is comfort with the paper format and pacing.

The SMC does not test what you know about mathematics; it tests how fast you can recognise standard problem patterns.

Late October: BMO Round 1 prep window

If your SMC score is in the top two per cent nationally, you should expect a BMO Round 1 invitation in late October. The window from the invitation to the BMO Round 1 sitting (mid-November) is approximately three weeks. This is the most valuable preparation window in Year 12, and we strongly recommend prioritising it over A-Level coursework where possible.

The practical pattern: sit one BMO Round 1 past paper per week under timed conditions, working from the most recent papers backwards. Mark your own work strictly — full written solutions only, partial credit only where the marking scheme would award it. Read Newman’s A Problem Seminar alongside, one chapter per week. Avoid attempting new problem types in this window; the goal is fluency in the formats that BMO Round 1 has used in the previous five years.

November: BMO Round 1 sitting

The BMO Round 1 sitting is on a fixed Friday in mid-November. The paper runs for three hours thirty minutes, with six open-ended problems, in your own school. Results are returned to the school in early December; Round 2 invitations are issued in mid-December for the Round 2 sitting in late January.

After the BMO Round 1 sitting, the next preparation block — for BMO Round 2 — begins in early December and runs through Christmas to the January sitting. Our preparation article for the December-January window will appear separately in this News editorial when we have the Year-12 cohort’s Round 1 results.
